PROJECT: ERC Research Net – 2nd ERC Research Summer School

Research under the umbrella of the ERC’s Research NET develops into the next phase with an attractive opportunity for young researchers - the 2nd Research Summer School. The aims are to foster continuity and increase the visibility of the ERC as a scientific organisation, supporting research in the field of resuscitation. For this reason ERC plans to further invest in and strengthen resuscitation research.

Research under the umbrella of the ERC’s Research NET develops into the next phase with an attractive opportunity for young researchers – the 2nd Research Summer School

The aims are to foster continuity and increase the visibility of the ERC as a scientific organisation, supporting research in the field of resuscitation. For this reason ERC plans to further invest in and strengthen resuscitation research.

Proposal:

One day meeting on Wednesday, September 19, 2018 in Bologna, Italy, Germany, as pre-conference event prior to ERC RESUSCITATION 2018. This will be the next step for our five years research process in senior researchers mentoring juniors in a supporting partnership to increase scientific output in the field of resuscitation.

10 senior researchers from the ERC Research NET

A Senior Researcher will be considered someone ≥ 35 years on the day of the Research NET Summer School.
As prerequisite, you must be already – or become before May 15 – a member of the ERC Research NET, and you must participate in RESUSCITATION 2018.

In addition, ERC needs a ONE PAGE application (Arial 10 or higher) including:

  • Name, date of birth, title, function and affiliation
  • Areas of research – 3 lines maximum
  • Three most important publications
  • Energy and motivation statement – 5 lines maximum
  • Statement that you are a member of the ERC Research NET and that you will participate in RESUSCITATION 2018 – 2 lines maximum
  • Commitment in time to invest for some years in mentoring young investigators – 2 lines maximum

The ERC Research NET selection committee will be able to choose up to 10 Mentors / Senior Researchers from all applications received.

After attending and upon proof of costs, Young Investigators are granted a 300 EUR compensation for covering one extra hotel night and travel expenses.
20 young investigators (YIs)

A Young Investigator will be considered someone under the age of 35 years old on the day of the Research NET Summer School.

Focus topics:

  • APPs / bystanders / first responder – telemedicine for lay people – telephone CPR – bystander CPR – dispatch centers
  • ESCAPE NET and other ERC Research NET Studies (i.e. EuReCa)
  • KIDS SAVE LIVES / schoolchildren education in resuscitation
  • Teaching in Resuscitation – e-learning / techniques / short focus sessions International Guidelines Process – contact to key senior mentors – GRADE methodology – most recent topics / drugs and Rock ‘n Roll

Format of the 2nd ERC Research Summer School:

  • Seniors – each presents in 5 min their focus about their scientific and research background / their motivation to participate in the program / what they can offer on energy / and future plans
  • YIs – each presents in a 10 min presentation focusing on their background / motivation / energy / future
  • Working groups on all topics above will deepen the proposed projects
  • Evening: Networking dinner to increase contact and facilitate collaboration

Optional site visit:

Maggiore Hospital Trauma Center (EMS headquarter and Intensive Care) Virtual Reality Experience at Italian Resuscitation Council (IRC) headquarter

Communication / publication:

  • Proposal presented in the ERC Newsletter
  • Invitation advertised via social media, web page
  • Reporting of the results in “Resuscitation” and social media
  • Resulting grant applications and future publications need to reference the ERC
  • Research net supporting initiative
  • YI need to report on annual base the development of their projects – summary
  • will be presented at the annual ERC meetings including an alumni meeting of ERC Research Summer School participants to foster networking and collaborations

Follow up processes and aims:

  • Face-to-face meetings at each ERC congress (as mentioned above), at least over the next and remaining four years
  • Establish financial sponsorship for the ERC research initiative by business and private partners, ERC and other players in the field of resuscitation.
  • The ERC Research Summer School acts as a start-up initiative for YI to get support to start research and helping in getting further grants to finance their research.
  • In this 5-year process, the participants will become familiar (class work, group work, homework) and learn from each other various skills for successful research, such as: write a project and have it funded; write a paper/abstract and have it accepted; do a literature systematic review, GRADE; methods of qualitative research; data collection, data reporting

Added value:

  • Strength of ERC Research NET activities / networking / industrial partnerships
  • Start of new European networks and projects
  • Start-up initiative for researchers in the field of resuscitation to open opportunities for collaboration and grant applications beyond local possibilities
