Woman survives 5 days after Colorado highway crash

FAIRPLAY, Colo. (AP) — A Colorado woman is recovering after being stranded in her car for five days after crashing off a rural highway southwest of Denver. Hikers found 43-year-old Kristin Hopkins of Highlands Ranch Sunday below U.S. Highway 285 near the community of Fairplay, apparently out of view of passing drivers. The Colorado State Patrol says she was conscious and coherent.

The Denver Post reports Hopkins was flown to a hospital in critical condition.

Patrol spokeswoman Cpl. Kris Galyean says Hopkins crashed Tuesday, going off the right side of the road on a curve. Her 2009 Chevrolet Malibu struck multiple trees, went down an embankment and rolled several times before landing on its top.

U.S. 285 runs through the scenic South Park area, a high-altitude valley of sprawling ranchland surrounded by mountains.
