An incident with few precedents: a violent explosion devastates the Bargi hydroelectric plant

A catastrophic event struck the Bargi (Italy) hydroelectric plant on Tuesday, April 9, around 2:30 p.m. An explosion of a turbine on the eighth floor triggered a fire and flooded the floor below. Twelve technicians from various companies were working on improvements to the plant. Three people lost their lives instantly. Five others sustained serious injuries. Four individuals are still missing.

The Events

The ongoing test

The explosion that tore apart the Bargi plant on Lake Suviana occurred during the testing of the second generation group. Enel Green Power, the owner of the plant, confirmed that efficiency improvement work was underway with the participation of Siemens, ABB, and Voith.

Injured resident

Among the five seriously injured is a resident of Camugnano, the municipality where the plant is located. Mayor Marco Masinara declared a citywide mourning, expressing solidarity with the victims and families.

Union protests

The Cisl Metropolitan Bologna Area organized a protest and strike following the tragedy. The incident has raised questions about safety in the workplace. Unions are demanding greater protection for workers. This tragedy has also impacted a previously scheduled national strike, highlighting the urgency of reviewing workplace safety norms and practices.

Slim chances of finding survivors

The Fire Department admitted that the hopes of finding people still alive among the missing are minimal. With three confirmed fatalities and five injured, the prospects of finding survivors are very low. This statement underscores the severity of the incident and the challenges of ongoing search and rescue operations.

People deceased in the incident

The three identified victims are Pavel Petronel Tanase, 45, residing in Settimo Torinese (Turin); Mario Pisani, 73, residing in San Marzano di San Giuseppe (Taranto); Vincenzo Franchina, 36, residing in Sinagra (Messina).

Rescue operations

Rescue operations have been extremely demanding and complicated. Fire Department teams have had to operate in very difficult conditions, with water and debris making the retrieval of victims and the search for the missing challenging. Logistic and environmental issues have required extraordinary efforts from rescuers, who have worked tirelessly to provide assistance and rescue in the areas affected by the incident.
