Misericordia of Sesto Fiorentino in Action in the Campi Bisenzio Flood

Solidarity in Action: The Commitment of the Misericordia of Sesto Fiorentino During the Flood of Campi Bisenzio

The flood that hit Campi Bisenzio has deeply shaken the community of Sesto Fiorentino, located just a ten-minute drive from the site of the event. What seemed unthinkable became reality, but the Misericordia of Sesto Fiorentino was ready to respond to the emergency from the evening of Nov. 2, when the orange weather alert had already caused inconvenience in the municipality.

The Misericordia went into action as an association affiliated with the municipal civil defense office. News of the Bisenzio River flooding in Campi triggered the Misericordia’s immediate mobilization to provide aid to affected neighbors. A team of volunteers made themselves available to the 118 Operations Center, using an all-terrain vehicle to reach a patient in need of dialysis therapy at Careggi Hospital in Florence.

Teams of volunteers worked tirelessly from the early morning hours until late at night, transporting residents to collection points, providing water, food and basic necessities to those stranded in their homes. At the Coop supermarket in Campi Bisenzio, a team worked with water pumps to empty the premises and rescue food not contaminated by water.

Over the next few days, a dozen volunteers armed with shovels, water pullers and water pumps worked tirelessly to clear homes of debris, shovel mud and suck water from basements and garages. The Misericordia mounted the CHP module, a water pump capable of sucking up 12,000 liters of water per minute, demonstrating extraordinary commitment to emergency management.

In addition to civil rescue, at the request of the 118 Operations Center, the Misericordia has been active on the medical front, providing first aid ambulances for the public and first responders. The unwavering work of the Sesto Fiorentino Misericordia demonstrated the value of solidarity and community commitment at critical times.
