Wrist cysts: what they are and how to treat them

Wrist cysts (or ganglion cysts) are neoformations filled with synovial fluid (a lubricating fluid found in joints and tendon sheaths) that can appear on the back and volar side of the wrist and can be very painful, especially after hard work

Why do wrist cysts appear

There are several causes of such cysts.

There are certain factors that can favour its development, such as predisposition, repeated strain or trauma.

What a wrist cyst looks like

Ganglion cysts appear as new growths on the wrist, which are not too hard and can be uncomfortable when moving the fingers or wrist.

How to flare wrist cysts

Because of their location near the tendons, wrist cysts can sometimes cause inflammation of the tendons, which can cause pain when moving the wrist or fingers.

In the early stages, to try and reduce the inflammation, a brace can be worn to keep the wrist still only during the night.

Wrist cysts: When to see a specialist

These neoformations are completely benign, but sometimes, because of their size or location, they can be cosmetically unpleasant or cause pain or discomfort.

It is important to consult a specialist with a muscle-tendon ultrasound to confirm the diagnosis.

How to treat wrist cyst

If the cyst is small or does not cause pain or discomfort, no surgery is necessary and night-time wrist support may be sufficient.

Surgery is indicated when the hygromas are large or painful.

Wrist cyst: can they be aspirated?

Absolutely not.

This type of cyst has a small pedicle that puts them in communication with the wrist joint.

If the internal fluid is aspirated and the external pouch is not removed, closing the communication with the joint, in 100% of cases the cyst will reform.

Can the wrist cyst recur?

Unfortunately, even after brace treatment or surgery, these cysts can recur.

In this case, further surgery can be performed to remove the cyst.
