Médecins Sans Frontières workers killed in Tigray: “A devastating blow to all Msf people everywhere”

Médecins Sans Frontières (Msf) “expresses its condolences for the tragic deaths of three colleagues in Tigray, Ethiopia”

This was stated in a statement. “Yesterday afternoon – the statement explains – Maria Hernandez, emergency coordinator in the region, Yohannes Halefom Reda, assistant coordinator, and Tedros Gebremariam Gebremichael, driver, were travelling when we lost contact with them.

This morning their vehicle was found empty and, a few metres away, their bodies lifeless”.

The NGO states that ‘no words can explain our pain, dismay and indignation at this terrible attack, and nothing can alleviate the loss and suffering of their families and loved ones, to whom we extend our deepest sympathy.

We condemn this attack in the strongest possible terms and will do everything in our power to shed light on what happened.

Maria, Yohaness and Tedros were in Tigray to provide assistance to people and it is unthinkable that this work cost them their lives. We are in contact with their families and ask that their privacy be respected at this difficult time.

Tigray (Ethiopia), the statement provides some information on the three Médecins Sans Frontières workers who lost their lives

“Maria Hernandez, 35, originally from Madrid,” it reads, “had started her work with Msf in 2015 in the Central African Republic and had since worked in Yemen, Mexico and নাইজেরিয়া. Yohannes Halefom Reda, assistant coordinator, was Ethiopian and 31 years old.
