Helicopter crashes on Monte Rosa, no fatalities

The aircraft was carrying five people, prompt rescue, all survived

A helicopter, involved in the route between the high altitude refuges Capanna Gnifetti and Regina Margherita on Monte Rosa, crashed in the area of the municipality of Alagna Valsesia.

The helicopter was performing its usual service connecting the two refuges, offering tourists and climbers, all Swiss nationals, a quick and safe way to travel between the high peaks. However, during the descent phase, the helicopter encountered a problem that forced what experts describe as a ‘heavy landing‘. The details of the problem, however, are still unclear.

The rescue services responded promptly

Swiss rescuers were on the scene, with Italian rescuers, in particular the 118 and the Soccorso Alpino, both of which are experienced in interventions in mountainous areas. The 118 initially reported that everyone on board was unharmed, but then corrected the balance to one with serious injuries, apologising for the confusion generated by the frenzy of the moment.

The accident demonstrates the importance and effectiveness of mountain rescue services. In potentially dangerous situations like this, a rapid and coordinated response can make the difference between a fatal outcome and a story with a happy ending. The rescue team was able to reach the scene quickly, despite the remote and difficult-to-access location, ensuring the safety of the passengers.

This incident brings attention back to the safety of helicopter travel in the mountains. Although these services are generally considered safe, the accident highlights the fact that unforeseen problems can arise, even in the hands of experienced pilots. This reiterates the importance of continuous maintenance and overhaul of flight equipment, pilot education and training, and strict adherence to safety procedures.

As the mountain community continues to support rescue efforts and safe travel, we can only hope that incidents like this become increasingly rare. Safety must remain a top priority to ensure that the breathtaking beauty of places like Monte Rosa can be enjoyed without risk.

The places

At 4554 metres, Capanna Margherita is the highest refuge in Europe and one of the most popular destinations for mountain enthusiasts. It houses an important scientific laboratory and is dedicated to Queen Margherita of Savoy, who stayed there in 1893. Capanna Gnifetti, located at 3647 metres, is the historic support point for the most demanding climbs, including the ascent to the Margherita refuge.
