CT angiography of the supra-aortic trunks and intracranial circulation (TSA): what it is and why it is performed

CT angiography of the supra-aortic trunks (TSA) and intracranial circulation is an examination that involves performing a CT scan (Computed Axial Tomography) while an intravenous contrast agent is being administered

CT angiography of the supra-aortic trunks (TSA) and intracranial circulation: the purpose of the examination is to evaluate the arteries of the neck and the circle of Willis (encephalon)

Compared to a classic inpatient angiography, supra-aortic trunk and intracranial CT angiography is a less invasive examination that can be performed on an outpatient basis as it does not involve cannulation of the femoral or radial artery or placement of an arterial catheter in the patient’s neck vessels.

What is CT angiography of the supra-aortic trunks and intracranial circulation used for?

CT angiography of the supra-aortic trunks and intracranial circulation (TSA) is a useful examination to diagnose abnormalities of the arteries of the neck and brain.

For example, it can detect:

  • Stenoses and occlusions
  • Arterial dissections
  • Arteriovenous malformations (AVM) and dural fistulas (FAVD)
  • Aneurysms and pseudoaneurysms
  • Thrombosis

How is Angio-CT of the supra-aortic trunks and intracranial circulation performed?

The examination takes only a few minutes.

After inserting an agocannula into a vein in the arm, the patient is placed on the CT bed.

During the examination, the contrast agent (i.e. an iodine-based liquid) is injected, followed by saline solution.

When the contrast agent is injected, it is common to feel a temporary sensation of warmth throughout the body.

Are there any preparation rules?

In preparation for CT angiography of the supra-aortic trunks and intracranial circulation (TSA), the patient must be fasting for 6 hours prior to the examination.

The patient should bring the blood test reports with him/her.

If the patient normally takes medication, this can also be done during the fasting phase, accompanied by a small amount of water.
