Sentinel lymph node technique: what it is, what it is used for

Sentinel node detection, removal and intraoperative histological study are a set of well-established procedures that avoid complete removal of axillary lymph nodes in 70% of cases, with significant advantages in the post-operative course

Complete removal can lead to consequences such as paresthesias, increased post-operative pain, increased risk of chronic lymphoedema, neurological deficits.

By injecting a harmless radioactive tracer into the breast, the first lymph node affected by the disease is specifically identified.

Intraoperative histological analysis allows us to decide whether to remove the other axillary lymph nodes, and to avoid a second operation in case of metastatic involvement of the sentinel lymph node

Long-term results in patients with a negative sentinel node appear favourable, demonstrating the validity of this method in axillary staging.
