Porto Emergenza for Ukraine: the mission in Lviv
The destination of this trip was Lviv, but with an intermediate stop: some boxes of humanitarian aid were also delivered to Intersos operative base in Przemysl.
To get there the crew members passed through Austria, the Czech Republic, Poland and then into Ukraine.

On a mission in Lviv, Ukraine: the story of Denise, volunteer of Porto Emergenza
“Departure at 11.50 p.m. – tells the volunteer Denise -.
Around 04.00 a.m. on the 8th of April we arrived in Austrian territory.
Around 10 a.m. we entered the Czech Republic (the only country, apart from Ukraine, that does not charge tolls to humanitarian aid vehicles).
At about 2 pm we entered Poland and at 5.40 pm we arrived at the Intersos headquarters to deliver material, where we were welcomed by Alexander.
We then stayed in a hotel in Rzeszow and the next morning resumed our journey towards the Ukrainian border.
After about an hour and a half we passed through customs for checks and finally, after another hour or so, entered Ukraine.
Still at customs, numerous people were clearly visible, almost exclusively women and children, who were leaving the country and being put on buses.
We were immediately struck by the soldiers, they were very young, all armed with Kalashnikovs”.
“At the customs there were tents set up by the Italian Red Cross and UNICEFF to welcome the refugees, check their documents and give them some refreshment”
“Very noticeable just after customs was not only the long line of cars and trucks leaving, but also the number of car transporter trucks parked by the roadside, which had just unloaded tanks and other military vehicles.
Proceeding towards Lviv we realised that in the villages furthest from the cities, the situation, even in general, was very serious, even if the war in those areas had fortunately not yet arrived: the houses of the poorest people were made of wood with roofs also made of wood or eternit, while other houses, a little more in good condition were made of bricks left rough with roofs made of tar paper or tiles.
The means of transport were also quite old and we even saw a horse pulling a plough in the field, while a cart cut us off.
The road, which is very bumpy, is littered with checkpoints with soldiers or civilians whose job it is to monitor the vehicles passing through, and they are always in the vicinity of lookout posts made of metal sheets and/or sandbags, and every so often Czech hedgehogs were present in addition to piles of sandbags.
However, life is relatively normal in this part of Ukraine: there is a curfew from 7pm to 7am.
די אַמבולאַנס און ויסריכט were delivered to Intersos in Lviv in the early afternoon.
We then headed back to the border, this time towards Poland to leave.
When we arrived 6/7 km from the customs, the queue of outgoing lorries began, while the queue of cars was about 3 km long.
After around 3 hours and half blocked in the customs because of a luxury of very important people, we succeeded in going out and we continued the trip in Poland.
We spent the night in a hotel on the outskirts of Krakow and the next day we started the journey to Italy”.
Three missions, three trips where a rescuer is most needed: did the Porto Emergenza volunteers do their duty? Yes, they did. But maybe a little bit more.
