The Italian State Police recently welcomed an iconic new member to its fleet: the Alfa Romeo “Tonale.” This modern and sporty car, nicknamed “Pantera,” represents a significant upgrade for the Italian police force, combining style and advanced functionality.
Delivery Ceremony in Turin
The new Alfa Romeo Tonale was officially handed over to the State Police during a ceremony in Turin at the Stellantis Style Center. The event was attended by prominent figures such as Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi, Police Chief Vittorio Pisani, Alfa Romeo CEO Jean-Philippe Imparato, and Stellantis Italia Managing Director Santo Ficili.
Technical Characteristics of the Tonale
The Tonale features a 1,500 cc, 163-horsepower gasoline hybrid engine with a 7-speed automatic transmission. It stands out for its advanced safety features, including ballistic and shatterproof protection. It is also equipped with the “Mercurio Extended” technology system designed to speed up checks during police operations.
Deployment and Implementation
Starting in December, the Tonale will be distributed to the General Prevention and Public Rescue Offices of all police headquarters and major police stations. A total of 850 of these cars will become part of the State Police fleet by the first half of 2024, thanks to a 2022 Consip tender won by Stellantis and aimed at law enforcement agencies.

The collaboration between the Italian Police and Alfa Romeo has deep roots, beginning in the 1950s with the 1900 Super TI special and continuing with historic models such as the Giulietta 1300 and Giulia super 1600. In the 1980s, the introduction of blue-and-white steering wheels with the Alfa Romeo 33, followed by models such as the Alfa Romeo 155, 159 and Giulia, solidified this bond.
