Italy, ice serac breaks loose on the Marmolada, 6 dead and 10 missing: rescues suspended, risk of new collapses

Marmolada: the flow of snow, ice and rock occurred near Punta Rocca on the ascent route

This afternoon, 3 July, on the Marmolada, at Pian dei Fiacconi, a rock detachment caused a crevasse to open on the glacier.

A serac of ice collapsed near Punta Rocca, the ascent route of the route to the summit.

Marmolada: at least 6 dead, 8 injured, 2 of whom are in serious condition, and at least 10 missing

The flow of snow, ice and rock – explains the SUEM, the Veneto Region’s 118 Emergency Medical Service, on Twitter – also involved the route of the normal route, while several roped parties were on it.

There is still uncertainty about the total number of people involved.

The fear of the authorities is that there may be unmonitored roped parties of hikers: in this sense, the cars parked in the valley are being checked in order to trace the owners.

Yesterday on the Marmolada, temperatures had reached a record high, with about 10 degrees on the summit.

SUEM VENETO ON THE TRAGEDY ON THE MARMOLADA: CLOSED TO THE PUBLIC, 18 EVACUATED FROM PUNTA ROCCA

“There are 6 ascertained victims. 18 people have been evacuated from the summit of Punta Rocca.

At the moment, parked cars are being checked to see if and how many are still missing.

The Marmolada is interdicted to the public’.

This is what the SUEM- Servizio Urgenza Emergenza Medica 118 of the Veneto Region wrote on Twitter.

FUGATTI (TRENTO): ENGAGED IN RESEARCH, RISK OF OTHER DETACHMENTS REMAINS

On the Marmolada “the Civil Protection system is active – and we are in contact with Curcio and Palazzo Chigi – which is engaged in the search, but it must be done safely, the temperatures are high and there is a risk for those who go into the field, in these moments, but this is proceeding”.

Maurizio Fugatti, president of the Autonomous Province of Trento, said this on RaiNews24 commenting on the Marmolada disaster.

Is there a risk of further detachments? ‘Certainly,’ says Fugatti, ‘because with the high temperatures and the risk is objective.

There is a risk of further victims or injuries, also because ‘moreover, it’s Sunday and there are people in our localities,’ concluded the president of the Autonomous Province of Trento.

Marmolada, will the search resume tomorrow morning?

The collapse of the sarac has left large unstable areas, it is not certain that, as things stand, the search will resume tomorrow morning: the safety of the rescuers depends on it.

The fire brigade has been taken to the summit and is continuing the search with drones.
