Russia, first case of the new Covid 'Kraken' variant: infected woman is fine

Russia, like the rest of the world, is confronted with new variants of Covid, in this case the one called ‘Kraken’

Rospotrebnadzor: ‘Kraken’ strain of coronavirus discovered in Russia for the first time

Rospotrebnadzor is the federal service for the supervision of consumer rights protection and human welfare.

It is this body that announced the first case of the variant to the Russian press.

The department indicated that a fairly wide range of varieties of the omicron strain of coronavirus is currently widespread in Russia, but the BA.5 line remains dominant.

It specified that the delta variant dominated in the second half of 2021 and was detected in isolated cases in the autumn of 2022.

The remaining strains have not been observed in recent months.

Russian woman infected with kraken is already cured

A 32-year-old Penza resident, who was diagnosed with ‘kraken’, suffered a coronavirus infection in a fortunately mild form.

According to the Telegram channel Shot, she had symptoms for five days, after which she recovered.

At the same time, it is still unclear where the Russian woman contracted ‘kraken’.

She claims that she has not travelled outside the country and that no one around her is ill.

The patient was also not vaccinated against the coronavirus.

‘Kraken’ can bypass the protection of people who have already been ill

The Kraken subvariant has become more contagious due to the altered structure of the spike protein, the head of the Yekaterinburg Viral Infection Research Institute of the SSC VB vector in Rospotrebnadzor, virologist Alexander Semenov, told TASS.

Semenov noted that so far there is no evidence that the ‘kraken’ causes a more serious disease, as well as that it is many times more infectious than known strains.

At the same time, the emergence of a new variant of the coronavirus overlaps with the flu season and acute respiratory viral infections.

Therefore, world experts are unanimously calling for precautionary measures, the expert pointed out.

The rapid spread of a new omicron subspecies had previously been announced in the US

The new variant of the XBB omicron strain of coronavirus started to spread rapidly after the holidays in parts of the US, particularly in the north-east of the country.

In reality, many countries, including Italy, are beginning to confront this new variant, which so far has not caused any serious effects but is characterised by its high contagiousness.

‘We are concerned about how contagious it is,’ said Maria van Kerkhove, epidemiologist and expert at the World Health Organisation (WHO).

Earlier, Politico columnist Carlo Martuscelli said that Europeans should prepare for bad news because of the threat of the spread of a sub-variant of the Kraken omicron strain.
