Fire in Nantes Cathedral: firefighters and police suspect the criminal track

Three fires were started inside the Nantes Cathedral. An investigation of the police into suspected arson is underway. The Prosecutor Pierre Sennes is the one who is conducting the investigations.

The fire destroyed stained glass windows and the grand organ at the 15th Century Saint-Pierre-et-Saint-Paul cathedral. It came a year after the devastating fire at Notre-Dame cathedral in Paris.

Thankfully, the fire in Nantes Cathedral was not so devastating as the Notre Dame Cathedral one. The local fire chief reported that this time, the fire had been contained. It was not absolutely comparable with the Notre-Dame scenario.

The area were the organ was, seems to be the only one involved. The damage is concentrated on the organ itself, which appears completely burnt and the platform on it is very unstable. It risks collapsing. Also, windows and glass all around have been destroyed by the fire. However, the roof and the other parts of the cathedral seem to be safe.

President Emmanuel Macron tweeted: “After Notre-Dame, St Peter and St. Paul Cathedral is in flames. Support to the firemen who are taking all the risks to save the Gothic jewel.”
