Africa, the worst cholera epidemic in decades kills 700 people in Malawi

Malawi’s worst cholera epidemic in two decades has so far claimed some 700 lives, after the disease spread to all districts of the southeast African country

The landlocked nation, prone to tropical storms and cyclones, has been battling a resurgence of the water-borne diarrhoeal disease since March.

The rainy season, which began in November, has worsened the situation.

Floods have displaced people, who often lack access to safe water and sanitation.

Authorities suspended the opening of primary and secondary schools in two major cities following the outbreak.

Urgent and massive health interventions are now essential to treat those affected and to limit the spread of the epidemic.
