What is haptoglobin?
Haptoglobin is a glycoprotein produced by the liver; its function is to bind to the free haemoglobin present in the blood
In the event of intravascular haemolysis, there is an increased release of haemoglobin, and haptoglobin is therefore called upon to retrieve it and return it to the liver.
Why measure haptoglobin?
The test can be useful for monitoring haemolytic processes.
Test for haptoglobin, are there any preparation rules?
The sample is usually taken in the morning, on an empty stomach.
Is it dangerous or painful?
The test is neither dangerous nor painful. The patient may feel the pinch as the needle enters the arm.
How does the test work?
The test is carried out by means of a simple blood sample.
