What is the urine test used for?
The urine test is a common screening test for possible diseases of the urinary system, and also allows kidney function to be checked.
The test is divided into three parts: physical examination (which analyses the colour and appearance of the urine), chemical examination (which reveals any substances present in the urine and their quantity) and microscopic examination of the urine sediment (which detects cellular and non-cellular debris).
The presence of protein, blood or white blood cells usually merits further investigation.
A sterile container for urine collection should be provided.
Who can perform the urine test?
The urine test is considered a routine test and can be performed on prescription.
Women may not undergo this test on menstruation days.
Is the urine test dangerous or painful?
The test is neither painful nor dangerous.
How is the urine test performed?
Urine collection must take place on the morning of the sample collection.
The patient should equip himself with a sterile urine specimen container purchased at the pharmacy or provided by the laboratory, taking care not to touch the inside or edges with his hands.
The patient will collect the intermediate stream of urine inside the container, leaving out the first and last stream of urine.
