Forest fires in Greece: Italy activated

Two Canadairs depart from Italy to provide relief in Greece

In response to a request for help from the Greek authorities, the Italian Civil Protection Department decided to send two Canadair CL415 aircraft of the Italian Fire Brigade to fight the extensive fires that have been affecting parts of the country for days. The planes took off shortly after 15:00 on 18 July from Ciampino airport, heading towards Elefsis airport.

European Civil Protection Mechanism activated as rescEU-IT resources

This mechanism makes it possible to send two Canadairs from Italy in case of external need, if they are not required for national emergencies. This ensures additional means to help countries facing major disasters, even outside the EU.

In order to support the pilots and maintain the necessary contacts with the local authorities, a representative of the Italian Civil Protection Department and one from the National Fire Brigade Corps will be present at the site of the operation. Their presence will be crucial to facilitate coordination between the Italian team and the Greek authorities in dealing with the ongoing emergency situation.

The deployment of the Canadairs is a tangible sign of solidarity and cooperation between the EU Member States. The devastating fires that are affecting Greece require a prompt response and Italy has readily offered to provide assistance through its specialised fire-fighting resources.
