Alcoholism: new awareness strategies in Europe

An Integrated Approach to Addressing Alcohol Consumption and its Effects in Europe

Informational-Educational Campaigns in Italy

In Italy, various initiatives have been launched to raise awareness among young people about the dangers of alcohol. Campaigns such as “Io non sbando” and “Non perderti in un bicchiere” have reached students in schools to disseminate information about the risks of substance abuse. Another campaign, “Elementary but not too much…“, focused on educating elementary school children, their parents, and teachers about the consumption of addictive beverages and other psychoactive substances.

European Awareness Initiatives

At the European level, projects like “Fyfa – Focus on Youth Football and Alcohol” and “Ja Rarha (Joint Action on Reducing Alcohol Related Harm)” have been developed, utilizing contexts such as football clubs to promote policies protecting minors from alcohol. These projects aim to use sports environments to spread prevention and awareness messages.

WHO Strategy and Policies

The WHO European Program of Work 2020-2025 supports Member States in developing and implementing effective policies for addiction control. Recommendations include increasing taxes on alcoholic beverages and limiting their availability and marketing. These measures have shown effectiveness in reducing alcohol consumption and related harm.

Effective Approaches to Youth Prevention

Studies have shown that methods such as dialogue and discussion are more effective than prohibitions in preventing alcohol abuse among young people. The National Alcohol Observatory emphasizes the importance of deconstructing the normalized perception of alcohol and addressing associated health risks, especially those that can have an immediate impact on young individuals.

These initiatives represent an important step in the fight against alcoholism, aiming to reduce health risks and improve the quality of life in Europe.
