In the event of major disasters, the expression ‘mobile civil protection column’ is again used in the Italian media, and perhaps it is appropriate to briefly explain what it is

The Mobile Column is a Civil Protection unit ready to go and able to mobilise quickly in the event of an emergency on regional, national and international territory

It consists of teams of rescuers, professionals and volunteers, and vehicles, also belonging to different organisations, capable of working together in a unified and coordinated manner.

The regional mobile column guarantees uniform operational standards and continuity of action for the entire duration of the emergency.

Principles of the Mobile Column

Self-sufficiency: specialised teams, professional and operational modules (logistics) ready to go and intervene in any type of emergency
Continuity: each module/team of the Regional Mobile Column ensures its own operation for the entire duration of the emergency
Performance homogeneity: the modular logic of the Regional Mobile Column makes it possible to aggregate homologous modules even in order to create “maxi-modules” and to alternate the type of the same module/team provided by different subjects

collects, assesses, organises and shares the information keeping in touch with the regional operations room
activates all the available resources present on the territory and indicated in its own civil protection plan
requests the regional operations room for the deployment of the Mobile Column by communicating the need for resources and personnel
takes care of the logistics necessary for the arrival and permanence of the Mobile Column and identifies the emergency areas to be activated (gathering of rescuers, sheltering of the population, etc.)
