Arterial hypertension as a response to stress
People who respond to states of acute stress with a sharp rise in blood pressure run the risk of developing high blood pressure over the years
A longitudinal study examined the blood pressure trend of 1196 healthy subjects who had been subjected to acute stress years before and demonstrated that the higher the blood pressure was on that occasion, the higher it was also years later if measured at rest .
A sharp rise in blood pressure following acute stress therefore predicts future hypertension
It can be hypothesized that the tendency to increase blood pressure is stable and therefore occurs every time the person is stressed, causing a stable increase in values even at rest in the long run.
If hypertension can be predicted by the response to acute stress, it follows that measuring blood pressure on that occasion can be useful for preventing arterial hypertension in subjects who could develop it even in the absence of ascertained medical causes, as well as in the simultaneous presence of them, because one cause does not exclude the other.
How to intervene on stress to prevent hypertension?
Since arterial hypertension is often a difficult condition to treat and constitutes a risk factor for the development of further pathologies (such as stroke and heart attack), it is important to intervene before the problem becomes chronic.
From a psychological point of view it is important to analyze the causes of stress, as well as the consequences, and it is possible to help the person react differently to what generates tension and anger in him (typical elements of the psychophysical state of someone who feels stressed).
The use of relaxation and self-distension techniques such as Autogenic Training is also indicated, which allow both to obtain a lowering of blood pressure values and to reach a psychophysical state of greater calm which represents a valid preventive tool against the development of stress.
